My current series is the Extinct Animal paintings. It is influenced by the Surrealists (René Magritte in style, Leonora Carrington in spirit), vintage sideshow posters, with a bit of Edward Gorey thrown in.
There are plenty of realistic scientific illustrations of extinct animals. Art, though, looks to go beyond just physical representation. With such a dark subject, one that’s off-putting to many, humor draws people in. It starts conversations and allows people to talk freely. These animals are beautiful and funny and tragic all at once, and these paintings are a testament to their stories.
